記憶力を競う少年少女向けのスペリング・コンテストが開催されるが、40歳にもなるガイは大会規則の隙をついて子どもたちと一緒のコンテストに出場する。当然のごとく子供たちを負かし勝ち進むガイ、大会に参加していたインド人の少年と知り合い奇妙な交流が始まる。やがて、取材リポーターの女性ジェニーが彼の本当の参加理由に気づいて…。
