1973年、全米女子テニスチャンピオンのビリー・ジーン・キングは、女子の優勝賞金が男子の1/8であるなど男女格差の激しいテニス界の現状に異議を唱え、仲間とともにテニス協会を脱退して“女子テニス協会”を立ち上げる。そんな彼女に、元男子世界チャンピオンで55歳になるボビー・リッグスが、男性優位主義の代表として挑戦状を叩きつけた…。
