英国海軍士官ジョン・リンゼイと、アフリカ人奴隷の女性との間に生まれた混血の女児ダイドは、父とその叔父マンスフィールド伯爵により家族の一員として育てられる。成長した彼女は、恋愛を経験するが身分の違いが亀裂を生み自身の複雑な立場を知る。やがてダイドは、マンスフィールド伯爵が英国の奴隷制度を廃止に導くのに影響を与える…。
