懐疑心が強く幽霊の存在を否定する心理学者のフィリップ・グッドマン教授。彼はあるとき、15年前に姿を消し音信不通になっていた憧れのベテラン学者から、「どうしてもトリックが見破れない」という3つの超常現象の調査依頼を受ける。グッドマンは調査対象の話を聞きトリックを暴くため旅に出るが、そこには想像を超えた恐怖体験が待っていた…。
