1862年のロンドンが舞台。気象学者のジェームズ・グレーシャーは飛行パイロットのアメリア・レンと共に、かつて誰も挑んだことのない高度を目指して気球遠征に旅立つ。目的は気象データを集めることと最高高度到達記録を更新することであったが、前人未踏の世界に到達した気球は不安定になり、生きて帰るためのサバイバルへと突入する…。
