ノースカロライナの小さな海沿いの町で、独身貴族を謳歌する男性トラヴィスと、なかなかプロポーズしてくれない彼氏がいる女性ギャビーが出会う。互いに医者同士で隣人になった二人は、ギャビーの飼っている犬の妊娠をきっかけに次第に惹かれ合っていく。彼らは結婚し結ばれるが10数年経ったある日、ギャビーが車で事故を起こし昏睡状態に…。
