短期間に離婚と母親の死を経験した若い女性シェリル・ストレイドは、将来への希望を失ってしまい生活は荒れ、乱暴で無鉄砲な行いが増えていった。やがてシェリルは無謀すぎる過酷な旅に出る…。彼女はパシフィック・クレスト・トレイルというアメリカ西海岸を縦断する長距離自然歩道を、たった一人で約1700km踏破するサバイバルに挑戦する。
